M6toll supports Wellbeing and Sensory Garden for Girlguiding Staffordshire
Midland Expressway Ltd (operators of the M6toll) are supporting Girlguiding Staffordshire with a donation of £1,000 to support a wellbeing and sensory garden space designed to make a difference to the mental health and wellbeing of the young people camping as well as an educational opportunity to understand more about the environment. The project is Youth Led with all the works being completed by young women aged 14 – 25. They will be completing all construction works and planting works for the project as well as being involved in the development of the design.
The Wellbeing and Sensory Garden is being built during Girlguiding Staffordshire’s International Camp, Unity 2022, taking place from 13th to 19th August 2022. The camp is going to bring together girls from across Staffordshire and the UK aged 10+ for a week of camping, adventure and excitement. The Wellbeing and Sensory Garden is a legacy project which will be used as a relaxation zone at the campsite for anyone using the campsite from across Staffordshire, the Midlands and further afield.
Alice Hopton from Girlguiding Staffordshire said: “Thank you to Midland Expressway Ltd for your support in our Wellbeing and Sensory Garden Project. Your contribution of £1,000 will be used towards the material and tool costs to develop planting areas within the garden. These planting areas will be both conventional with raised beds and also to bring the STEM element to the garden where we are looking into hydroponics and other methods. The funding will enable our young members, who will be building the garden, to learn about how the environment works as one, the science behind growing things, the technology used to assist growth, the engineering to build the garden, how nature can be seen as art and naturally occurring mathematics“.
Jo Brett, MEL Social Squad member added: “As an organisation we feel it’s important to recognise Mental Health Awareness Week and everything it aims to highlight. Through our In the Community scheme we are always keen to support local charities that support Mental Health and Wellbeing and highlight its importance”.
Girlguiding Staffordshire has over 9,400 members from aged 5 upwards and are active in nearly every town and village in the county. They give girls and young women a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, gain valuable life skills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities.
